Surf & Sage is a celebration of slow fashion, where every piece is lovingly handcrafted.

As a self-taught designer, my sewing journey began because I wanted to make cute clothes for myself. I loved exploring Pinterest and finding images of beautiful clothes. I couldn't find those designs in South Africa and I wasn't willing to pay for international brands with the impact mass production and importing has on the environment. So learning to make my own clothes was clearly the way to go!

My sewing journey began with watching YouTube tutorials and repurposing old tablecloths. Tannie 'Mammalou' kindly showed me the basics of using a sewing machine. After many panicked moments - like breaking my first needle and assuming the machine was ruined - I slowly built my skill set, one mistake and lesson at a time. There are lots of moments like that in a self-taught journey and I now love sharing my knowledge with those who are eager to learn.

Surf & Sage was born with a collection of bucket hats, and since then, it’s blossomed into a full line of thoughtfully designed garments. With each bucket hat, my sewing got better and better and I slowly began trying out more complex patterns. Needless to say my first "garments" were certainly in the sample stage, and I still had a lot to learn. I am beyond grateful to everyone who has supported me on this journey, and I cannot wait to share more of my creativity.

At Surf & Sage, my commitment to slow fashion goes beyond just style. Sustainability and ethical practices are at the heart of everything I do. From start to finish, I ensure every step of the production process is kind to the planet. When you choose Surf & Sage, you’re not just investing in timeless, high-quality pieces—you’re also supporting a more conscious and compassionate future. I try my best to source high-quality fabrics or upcycle fabrics for my pieces. All of my fabric scraps have a chance at a second life with Roo pouches, quilted totes or bucket hats. Minimizing fabric waste is a big goal of mine.

I love designing pieces that you can wear in your daily life, not just for special occasions because clothes are meant to be worn, not just to hang in your cupboard. I live a very outdoor-based life and love wearing my pieces out in the garden or at the beach. I hope you do the same with yours.
